Blue-green algae Red Alert lifted for Malpas Dam
7 APRIL 2025The Red Alert warning issued on 2 December 2024 for high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae at Malpas Dam located near Guyra on the Northern tablelands has been lifted. Malpas Dam is now on Green Alert for blue-green algae.
The Red Alert was lifted following two consecutive laboratory algal reports which indicates that the sites are no longer on red alert for blue-green algae.
Water users should be aware of the risks associated with entering any waterway in NSW. These waters are untreated, their quality is unknown, and conditions can change rapidly. Always exercise caution and assess the risks.
All untreated water should be considered unsuitable for potable use. Boiling the water does not inactivate algal toxins.
As algal numbers can change dramatically with changes in conditions, water users should avoid water which is discoloured or gives off an earthy or musty odour.
Blue-green algae is naturally occurring and can reproduce quickly in still or slow-flowing water when there is abundant sunlight and sufficient nutrients.
