Blue-green algae Red Alert lifted for Darling River at Wilcannia
24 FEBRUARY 2025WaterNSW has lifted the blue-green algae Red Alert warning issued on 16 January 2024 for Darling River at Wilcannia. Currently there is no algae alert in place.
Water users should always consider the risks when entering any waterway in NSW, with the understanding that these waters are untreated, its quality is unknown, and conditions can change quickly. It is advised that water users use this waterway at their own risk.
All untreated water should be considered unsuitable for potable use. Boiling the water does not inactivate algal toxins.
WaterNSW will continue routine water quality monitoring and advise of any change.
Blue-green algae is naturally occurring and can reproduce quickly in still or slow-flowing water when there is abundant sunlight and sufficient nutrients.
For information about potable water supplies and the management of blue-green algae risks in nearby treated drinking water, please contact your local council or water utility provider.
