Tallowa Dam fish lift upgrade

About

Tallowa Dam features a unique fish lift system.  The fish lift includes a 2,500 litre bucket along a 30 metre track which travels over the dam wall.  Due to aging infrastructure and recent flooding impacts, the fish lift is currently not operational and will be undergoing electrical and mechanical upgrades to return it to service.

Work will also include access for ongoing maintenance. Repairing the fish lift will enable fish migration between the lower and upper Shoalhaven River and helps protect ten native fish species, including the endangered Grayling.

The Tallowa Dam fish lift upgrade aims to restore natural fish migration routes in the Shoalhaven River. This project holds profound cultural importance for Jerrinja peoples, whose connection to the Shoalhaven River and its ecosystems runs deep.

The river is a living part of their cultural heritage, embodying connection to Country, ancestors, and the Dreaming. This project will help heal Country and reflects the shared commitment to preserving cultural values and the natural environment.
