The electrical upgrade project at Golgeldrie Weir is complete. The project is part of our ongoing work to ensure existing infrastructure meets modern engineering standards.
Gogeldrie Weir was completed in 1959, with landscaping and tree planting of adjoining lands completed in 1964. The weir is a vital component in the Coleambally Irrigation Scheme that controls and diverts water from the Murrumbidgee River to the Coleambally area.
The weir features six automated gates that manage water levels in the weir pool and control downstream releases for irrigators. The gates open individually by electric motors. Each gate is approximately six metres high, 12m wide and weighs 24 tonnes.
What's involved?
The project has included:
- replacement of the main electrical switchboard
- replacement of six weir gate winch motors with actuators and gear boxes
- renewal of the gate automation system; and
- replacement of instrumentation cable.
The 220-tonne crane with a 70-metre arm was needed to reach gates three to six across the Murrumbidgee River.

Timeline
Work started in June 2025 and was completed in November 2025.
Future work
Work to replace the bearings on the main shafts of the six weir gates is planned for early to mid-2026. This upgrade will further improve the reliability of the gates and help to ensure consistent service to our customers.
WaterNSW will work closely with impacted stakeholders and provide updates throughout the project.
Location
Gogeldrie Weir is 85m in length across the Murrumbidgee River. The weir is state heritage listed due to its significant role in the irrigation scheme and as an integral component of the ambitious engineering project to irrigate inland NSW.
