WaterNSW is upgrading the electrical equipment at Golgeldrie Weir. The project is part of our ongoing work to ensure existing infrastructure meets modern engineering standards.
Gogeldrie Weir was completed in 1959, with landscaping and tree planting of adjoining lands completed in 1964. The weir is a vital component in the Coleambally Irrigation Scheme that controls and diverts water from the Murrumbidgee River to the Coleambally area.
The weir features six automated gates that manage water levels in the weir pool and control downstream releases for irrigators. The gates opened individually by electric motors. Each gate is approximately six metres high, 12m wide and weighs 24 tonnes.
What's involved?
We're planning to:
- establish a site compound and laydown area
- replace the main electrical switchboard
- renew the gate automation system
- replace the bearings on the main shafts of the gates and
- trench and replace instrumentation cable.
Heavy machinery including a large crane will be used to assist with lifting and installing the new components. We are not expecting any interruption to our customers' water supply during the work.
Access
Public access to the caravan park and nearby boat ramp will not be affected by the work.
Visitors might notice some temporary disruptions around the area. These might include additional noise, machinery, and an increase in construction-related traffic. WaterNSW will minimise these impacts where possible.
Timeline
Work to upgrade the electrical and mechanical components of Gogeldrie Weir will start in June 2025 and will be completed by early 2026, weather permitting.
Location
Gogeldrie Weir is 85m in length across the Murrumbidgee River. The weir is state heritage listed due to its significant role in the irrigation scheme and as an integral component of the ambitious engineering project to irrigate inland NSW.
Consultation
WaterNSW will work closely with impacted stakeholders and residents and provide updates throughout the project.
