Hazard reduction burns near WaterNSW regional dams

2 MAY 2025

Hazard reduction burns near WaterNSW regional dams during autumn and early winter will help protect dams, weirs and water supply infrastructure from future intense wildfires.

Burns are planned for Pindari, Copeton, Split Rock and Chaffey dams in the north of the state, Glennies Creek in the Hunter, Wyangala and Windamere in the Central West, Blowering and Brogo dams in the south, as well as near several weirs in the Riverina.

“If you're travelling to or near one of these WaterNSW dams over the next few months, make sure you check the NSW Rural Fire Service website or the Hazards Near Me app for the latest advice,” WaterNSW Executive Manager Operations, Ronan Magaharan, said.

Hazard reduction burns will range from routine vegetation management to broad acre burns, and will be conducted over autumn and early winter as conditions allow near our dams and water supply infrastructure.

“These burns will build on works carried out last year at Copeton and Wyangala dams, with a focus on developing a network of strategic advantage zones around key water supply infrastructure.”

WaterNSW works closely with the Rural Fire Service and other agencies across regional NSW when planning and conducting hazard reduction burns. Extensive planning and reviews are conducted to ensure WaterNSW meets its obligations under the Rural Fire Act.
