Lake Cargelligo embankments upgrade update

13 FEBRUARY 2024

Initial work objectives on the Lake Cargelligo embankment upgrade have been achieved, with prioritised activities on embankments C2 and C3 now completed to improve the safety of the embankment structures.

Work is expected to re-start later this year, following a WaterNSW review to identify design and methodology improvements for the next phase of construction, a WaterNSW spokesperson said.

The review aims to identify cost-saving options by examining ways to make the construction process more efficient, and identifying alternate supply and material options.

While construction works are on hold, the lake will be allowed to re-fill from its current level of 67.6% to full capacity (100%) for the remainder of the irrigation season, benefitting WaterNSW customers and the local community.

WaterNSW will keep the community and customers informed as soon as the review of the next phase of work is finalised, including completion timings.

WaterNSW will continue to deliver a number of local activities during the review period, including meeting Aboriginal Cultural Heritage commitments on surrounding properties, and ongoing engagement with the project’s Registered Aboriginal Parties.

Over 66,000 tonnes of earth have been moved and over 900 metres of pipe laid since works got underway at Lake Cargelligo in May last year. This work has included embankment stabilisation, and drainage and pipe installation at priority areas.

Part of an ongoing upgrade to the embankments of the dam, the works will ensure the lake’s compliance with modern engineering standards and help meet current and future needs of water users in the area.
