Stevens Weir water level reduction alert to landholders

23 MAY 2023

Landholders downstream of Stevens Weir, on the Edward-Wakool River system, have been advised to be alert to changes in river levels as the weir storage level is reduced for important maintenance.

WaterNSW is advising customers and river users that the Stevens Weir pool level will gradually be lowered following completion of irrigation supply requirements to Murray Irrigation’s Wakool Main Canal for the 2022-23 season.

WaterNSW customers, boat owners, landholders and other river users are advised to prepare for the draw down, monitor water levels closely and be aware of snags and other obstructions that may appear while water levels are low.

The reduction of the water level in Stevens Weir commenced this week (22 May) and the cycle of storage drawdown, maintenance and weir refill is expected to take approximately 10 weeks.

The weir storage drawdown is in accordance with regulatory requirements and will provide suitable conditions for important maintenance at Wakool River offtake regulator, Yallakool Creek offtake regulator, Colligen Creek Weir and Stevens Weir.

WaterNSW general manager regional operations, Ben Coffey, said the maintenance has been scheduled to minimise disruption to customers and water users.

“By undertaking this maintenance outside periods of peak demand WaterNSW can ensure the work has adequate time for completion, without disrupting the supply of water to customers and communities.

“The thorough upkeep of major assets is critical to the reliability, longevity and cost-effectiveness of operating them, and one of the many essential support functions our customers pay for in their pricing determination.”
