Lake Cargelligo embankments upgrade update

18 DECEMBER 2023

Over 66,000 tonnes of earth have been moved and over 900m of pipe laid since works got underway at Lake Cargelligo in May this year.

Part of an ongoing upgrade to the embankments of the dam, the works will ensure the lake’s compliance with modern standards and help meet the needs of water users in the area.

“We’ve made some great progress on the project this year,” a spokesperson for WaterNSW confirmed today.

“Recent works include stripping and preparing the new embankments with stabilised material and new drainage pipework and fittings, as well as rebuilding and widening the embankments with conditioned materials.”

Works will shut down from 22 December until 8 January, with upcoming work planned in in the new year including ongoing vegetation removal, the installation of filter trenches across all embankments, upgrades of existing lake outlets, and bore drilling and trench digging.

To maximise the amount of work that can be completed before the 2024 irrigation season, storage capacity of the lake was recently limited to 75%.

“Fortunately, with the lake already below 75% capacity, this change in storage capacity has not required releasing any water,” the spokesperson said.

“This change will not impact recreational users, who will continue to have full use of the lake and public boat ramps.”

The project is due to be completed by mid to late 2024, weather permitting.
