Copeton pest control to protect catchment and community
11 MAY 2026WaterNSW will support a coordinated aerial pest control program at Copeton Dam as part of a broader, multi-agency initiative - including private property - across the Gwydir River Valley, from 11-15 May.
The program, led by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and supported through the NSW Government’s “Good Neighbours Program”, brings together multiple land managers and private landholders to deliver a comprehensive approach to pest animal management across approximately 46,900 hectares of land.
The operation will include land managed and leased by WaterNSW at Copeton Dam, along with adjoining NPWS estate, State Forest, Crown land and private property, reflecting a co-ordinated large-scale approach to pest management.
The aerial operation will be conducted by trained and accredited professionals under strict safety and animal welfare protocols, using helicopters to access rugged terrain and dense bushland.
During the program period, public access to parts of Copeton Dam will be temporarily restricted to ensure the safety of visitors, staff and contractors. Signage and on ground controls will be in place.
The program aims to:
- Reduce pest animal populations across the landscape
- Support agricultural productivity by reducing grazing pressure and land degradation
- Protect native vegetation and biodiversity
- Minimise erosion and safeguard water quality in the catchment
- Support neighbouring landholders and regional biosecurity outcomes
WaterNSW will work closely with NPWS, Local Land Services and the community to ensure the safe and effective delivery of the program, according to WaterNSW executive general manager land and water operations, Rob O’Neill.
“Pest animals cause significant environmental damage, including erosion, vegetation loss, and water quality impacts, and can reduce agricultural productivity. Coordinated control helps protect the catchment, biodiversity, and surrounding farming operations,” he said.
Background
Aerial control is the most effective and humane method for reducing pest populations across large, rugged and inaccessible terrain in a short timeframe.
The program is primarily targeting deer and other invasive pest animals impacting the catchment, environment and surrounding agricultural land.
Strict safety protocols are in place, including temporary area closures, exclusion zones, and pre-operation surveillance. The public is asked to follow all signage and avoid closed areas.
The operation is led by NPWS in partnership with WaterNSW, Local Land Services, State Forests and private landholders under a coordinated, cross-tenure approach.
