Burrinjuck receives record inflow volume total for October

11 NOVEMBER 2022

The Murrumbidgee River’s Burrinjuck Dam received its record highest October inflow volume total last month – 20% more than the entire storage capacity of the dam.

At 100% of capacity Burrinjuck Dam holds slightly more than 1000 gigalitres (GL). During October the dam received almost 1200 GL, the highest inflow for that month since relevant record-keeping commenced at the site in 1890.

Burrinjuck currently sits at 96% of capacity, with low-volume, controlled releases continuing to create as much space in the dam to capture inflows expected from weekend rainfall, as forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau).

Releases will be cut prior to the weekend rain so water released from the dam does not add to downstream tributary river peaks generated by the rain across the region, according to the Bureau forecast.

Blowering Dam continues to exceed capacity as a result of inflow to the storage, with the rate of spill likely to increase as the volume of water arriving from the upstream catchment increases early next week.

WaterNSW is working with the Bureau of Meteorology and the NSW State Emergency Service to monitor weather forecast and projected inflows, as well as downstream river impacts.
