Blue-green algae Red Alert warning lifted for Macquarie River downstream Burrendong Dam to Dubbo.

10 FEBRUARY 2023

The previously issued Red Alert level warning (high alert) for toxic blue-green algae has been downgraded to a lower alert level for Macquarie River downstream of Burrendong Dam extending to and past Dubbo in the Central West region.

This is based on recent algae sampling results from the Macquarie River and from the spillway at Burrendong Dam. Algae levels in Burrendong Dam have reduced however the storage is still at Red Alert level for potentially harmful algae.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.

Blue-green algae usually appear as green paint-like scums on the water, near the edges, or as greenish clumps throughout the water. It makes the water appear dirty, green or discoloured and generally has a strong musty or earthy odour.

People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice.

Visit the local council or local water utility websites for information about the management of blue-green algae risks in the nearby treated drinking water supplies.
