Blue-green algae Red Alert warning for Carcoar Dam has been cleared

4 MAY 2023

The red alert warning for blue-green algae at Carcoar Dam has been lifted after two consecutive algal samples showed levels below the red alert threshold. The site is now on an amber alert for blue-green algae.

While on an amber alert, the water is generally considered safe for water sports, but users are still advised to exercise caution. Additionally, it is not recommended to drink untreated or boiled water from this site due to the risk of stomach upset, as boiling the water does not eliminate the algal toxins. The water should not be used for potable purposes, and alternative sources or prior treatment of raw water should be considered for domestic use.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight, and sufficient levels of nutrients.

Blue-green algae usually appear as green paint-like scums on the water, near the edges, or as greenish clumps throughout the water. It makes the water appear dirty, green, or discoloured and generally has a strong musky or earthy odour.

People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice.

Visit the local council or local water utility websites for information about the management of blue-green algae risks in the nearby treated drinking water supplies.
