Greater Sydney drought information

In the Greater Sydney region, WaterNSW manages a total of 21 storage dams, including 11 major dams that can hold more than 2.6 million megalitres of water. Water for these dams is collected from five catchment areas covering 16,000 square kilometres.

With February 2020 rainfall bringing Greater Sydney storage to 82%, we will no longer be updating this Greater Sydney Drought page in 2020. We will, however continue to monitor conditions and will recommence if required.

  • In the first 8 weeks of 2020 we have received 16 times the total rainfall for 2019.
  • Greater Sydney storage levels increased from 42.1% at the end of January to 82.0% at the end of February.
  • 238 mm of rainfall dropped on the Greater Sydney catchment areas from 7 – 12 February.
