Blue Mountains assets upgrade

About the project

WaterNSW is continuing to deliver the Blue Mountains Asset Upgrade program to refurbish and restore various assets across dams, weirs, regulators and water supply infrastructure to improve water delivery to our customers.

Initiated in 2017, the program aims to improve access conditions, facilitate efficient water delivery and ensure that infrastructure continues to meet current operation and safety standards, environmental and heritage requirements.

Works will be completed in stages as sites are prioritised based on current condition and with the more critical assets being scheduled first. Remaining sites will be assessed and scheduled in future work programs.

Asset locations in the Blue Mountains to be upgraded include:

  • Upper Cascades dam and pumping station
  • Middle Cascade dam and pumping station
  • Lower Cascades dam and pumping station
  • Whipcord Creek Weir
  • Lake Medlow dam
  • Greaves Creek dam and pumping station
  • Narrow Neck pumping station

Benefits

This work will ensure WaterNSW continues to maintain water supply infrastructure as well as meet current operation and safety requirements.

During construction, there will be additional contractors staying in the Blue Mountains which will benefit Katoomba and surrounding areas.

During the upgrade

During construction, there will be some increase in personnel, vehicle movements, noise and dust near the sites. Prior to work starting landowners near our work sites will be notified.

At relevant sites, water flows will be interrupted during stages of the project to allow access to refurbish infrastructure. Affected customers will be notified prior to the outage.
