Wyangala Dam releases reduced

Wyangala Dam releases reduced

12 August 2021

Releases from Wyangala Dam into the Lachlan River have been reduced from 11 gigalitres per day (GL/day) to 8 GL/day, to reduce downstream river heights.

WaterNSW is continuing airspace operations at Wyangala Dam – currently at 93.5% of capacity - to maximise storage capacity to capture inflows anticipated from future rain on a well-saturated upstream catchment.

The reduced dam releases will reduce river levels below Cowra by at least one metre and assist in reducing inundation of access roads and low-lying properties.

The Lachlan Airspace Reference Panel has recommended maintaining a minimum airspace target of 10% at Wyangala Dam, to be achieved by making sufficient releases to keep the dam storage level at a maximum 90% by the end of August.

The intention is to take advantage of the absence of rain in weather forecasts for the next week to continue reducing the storage level while minimising the impact on downstream landholders, water users and the wider community. The adopted strategy is to reduce the storage level by targeting a flow of minor flood level (16,000 megalitres/day) at Cotton’s Weir in Forbes.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s current outlook indicates little prospect of rain for the next 8 to 10 days.

Should the current situation change, the Lachlan Airspace Reference Panel will meet again to review airspace targets and release volumes.

WaterNSW advises landholders and the public to monitor advice from the Bureau of Meteorology regarding changing river heights and the need for precautions with livestock and infrastructure. WaterNSW will continue to work with the Bureau to monitor forecasts and inflow projections.
