Greater Sydney Dam Storage Update

Greater Sydney Dam Storage Update

08 May 2021

The recent rain overnight in Greater Sydney has seen more rainfall than forecast in Sydney’s catchment areas, producing additional minor inflows into the city’s dams.

Several of the metropolitan dams, including Avon, Nepean and Cordeaux Dams, were already experiencing minor spills as a result of this week’s persistent rainfall.

Warragamba Dam’s catchment inflows also increased, and peaked overnight at around 65 gigalitres per day, after recording 80mm average rain over the catchment for the event.

In accordance with operating protocols, WaterNSW yesterday commenced minor operational releases from Warragamba Dam.

The current storage levels at Warragamba Dam are 99.2%. After last night’s rainfall, current forecasts indicate that there will be a minor spill commencing this afternoon.

Based on current information, the discharge will not have a significant impact on the downstream Nepean River.
