Urgent works temporarily halt Blowering Dam releases

Urgent works temporarily halt Blowering Dam releases

09 July 2020

WaterNSW is in the process of contacting businesses and landholders around the Tumut River with information regarding a temporary halt to water releases from Blowering Dam to allow for urgent remedial works and safety inspections.

Individual letters containing detailed information about the interruption to flows will be circulated in the coming week.

WaterNSW wants to assure all businesses and landholders reliant on the Tumut River that the works will be carried out as swiftly as possible to minimise disruption.

Releases from the dam into the Tumut River will stop on two occasions;

  • Tuesday 21 July to Wednesday 22 July 2020 and;
  • Tuesday 4 August to Thursday 6 August 2020.

WaterNSW Executive Manager of System Operations, Adrian Langdon said that to carry out the remedial works the coaster gate in the hoist house need to be closed, releases would be stopped, and the pool drained to provide a dry and safe work area for the work to proceed.

“Releases from the dam into the Tumut River, downstream of Blowering Dam, will be disrupted during both the occasions for about 48 to 72 hours,” he said.

“The break in supply is likely to cause moderate impacts on downstream water users – especially in the absence of tributary flows - so WaterNSW is contacting those landholders most likely to be affected to permit for alternative arrangements to be made.

“Impacts on landholders could include the loss of the river flow as a barrier to stock movement, and farm infrastructure such as pumps may require relocation temporarily.”
