Red Alert warning lifted for the Macintyre River at Boggabilla Weir

23 January 2020

The Red Alert for the Macintyre River at Boggabilla Weir has now been lifted. Sampling by WaterNSW has shown reduced levels of blue-green algae. The site is now at Amber Alert with fortnightly monitoring still in place.

As the Red Alert has been lifted there are no longer any restrictions on recreational activities as previously advised. Recreational and stock and domestic users are advised to report any scums or other signs of blue-green algae to local council.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.

Updates about blue-green algae blooms and red level warning areas can be obtained by visiting – https://www.waternsw.com.au/water-quality/algae or calling 1800 999 457.
