Red Alert warning lifted for Saltwater Creek Outlet to Rainbow Beach near Port Macquarie

21 January 2020

The Red Alert for Saltwater Creek Outlet to Rainbow Beach in Bonny Hills, south of Port Macquarie, has now been lifted. Sampling by Port Macquarie Hastings Council has shown significantly reduced levels of blue-green algae. The site is now at Green Alert with regular monitoring still in place.

As the Red Alert has been lifted there are no longer any restrictions on recreational activities as previously advised. Recreational users are advised to report any scums or other signs of blue-green algae to local council.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.

Updates about blue-green algae blooms and red level warning areas can be obtained by visiting our algae webpage or calling 1800 999 457.
