Red Alert warning lifted for Lake Lyell near Lithgow

21 January 2020

The Red Alert for Lake Lyell has now been lifted. Sampling by Energy Australia has shown significantly reduced levels of blue-green algae. The site is now at Amber Alert with fortnightly monitoring still in place.

As the Red Alert has been lifted there are no longer any restrictions on recreational activities as previously advised. Recreational and stock and domestic users are advised to report any scums or other signs of blue-green algae to local council.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.

Updates about blue-green algae blooms and red level warning areas can be obtained by visiting our algae webpage.
