Recent rain results in good inflows for regional dams

30 July 2020

Important regional water storages are seeing a welcome increase after days of rain makes its way into major dams.

Rainfall over the previous five days has resulted in rises to stream flows across the state with healthy inflows to dams in Northern, Central, Hunter and South Coast valley dams.

Southern valleys recorded less rainfall and smaller inflows.

Burrendong dam in the state’s central west is moving towards 30 percent capacity after dropping to less than 2 percent just 6-months ago.

WaterNSW spokesperson Tony Webber said the early signs of increasing dam levels were encouraging.

"We've seen some heavier falls that probably weren't on the radar which is resulting in some really healthy inflows into Burrendong and Chaffey dams among others," Mr Webber said.

“We’re hoping to see dam levels continue to rise as rain from the previous days continues to flow into storages.”

Chaffey Dam, upstream of Tamworth, has surpassed 20 percent capacity for the first time in almost a year, bringing a much-needed increase in water security to towns in the Tamworth area.

The new Chaffey- to- Dungowan pipeline will halt operation when the dam reaches 20 percent – as per operating regulations - with water supply resuming from the Peel River.

"While this still doesn’t bring towns like Dubbo and Tamworth out of drought it does alleviate some immediate stress around water security."

Brogo Dam on the South Coast, Lostock dam in the Hunter Valley and Tallowa dam in the Shoalhaven are all spilling.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued flood warning for Belubula, Hunter and Brogo catchment: moderate flooding at Canowindra (Belubula River) and minor flooding at Bega North.

Major dam level increases over previous five days;
