Chaffey to Tamworth pipeline operational

Chaffey to Tamworth pipeline operational

17 June 2020

A permanent pipeline connecting Chaffey Dam directly to Tamworth is now operational capping off a substantial achievement in completing a critical drought response project in under a year and extending Tamworth’s water supply by 12 months.

The objective of the new 18.2km pipeline is to ease pressure on Chaffey Dam supply by piping water to Tamworth Regional Council for treatment and distribution to reduce transmission losses incurred when water travels down the Peel River.

Once the pipeline is turned on, regular dam releases down the river to supply Tamworth’s town water will stop.

“We are extremely proud of the work done by WaterNSW, MPC Kinetic and the Tamworth Regional Council” said WaterNSW Executive Manager of Assets Ronan Magaharan.

“This pipeline represents a commitment to finding solutions to water security issues in our regional areas, and on top of that we’ve delivered the project in record time and within budget.”

WaterNSW and construction partner MPC Kinetic, completed the pipeline in less than half the time estimated for comparable projects, as part of the NSW Government’s drought response to secure town water supply for Tamworth.

“The new pipeline is an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to extending town water supply for Tamworth, Moonbi and Kootingal residents and businesses,” said Tamworth Regional Council Director Water and Waste, Bruce Logan. “We are pleased that it is now online.”

“WaterNSW and MPC Kinetic should be commended on how quickly they have been able to deliver this project.”

The pipeline will be operated in line with State and Federal environmental approval conditions.

A temporary weir and pumping stations that were installed at the existing Dungowan to Tamworth water supply pipeline will be removed in the coming weeks.

The project has injected more than $1.3 million into the community, engaged 30 local businesses and recruited a workforce comprising one-third of local workers including tradesmen, truck drivers, fencers and heavy machine operators.
