Blue green algae Red Alert warning lifted at Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head

Blue green algae Red Alert warning lifted at Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head

23 January 2020

A Red Alert level warning (high alert) for blue-green algae has been lifted for Lake Ainsworth in the North Coast region following sampling by Ballina Shire Council.

As the Red Alert has been lifted there are no longer any restrictions on recreational activities as previously advised.

Recent rainfall in the catchment has seen significant inflows to the lake which have reduced the levels of blue-green algae. These inflows most likely also contained reasonable nutrient loads, which, once conditions settle, may help see a quick increase in blue-green algae growth.

Recreational users are therefore advised to apply caution and avoid any areas where discolouration or scums appear or where the water gives off an earthy or musty odour.

Report all signs of blue-green algae to Ballina Shire Council.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.

People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice.
