324 pump restrictions extended for northern valleys

WaterNSW is advising that a NSW Government temporary pump restriction to preserve flows in the northern river valleys will be extended to 17 February.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE), put in place a restriction order to protect flows for critical needs in the northern basin on 17 January which was to expire on 31 January.

The new order applies to unregulated access licences, regulated (high security) and regulated (general security) access licences in the northern NSW Murray Darling Basin, including the Barwon-Darling River.

An exemption remains in place for users upstream and immediately downstream of Bathurst, specifically the Campbells River Downstream Management Zone, Macquarie River above Bathurst Management Zone, Fish River Water Source – downstream of Lake Oberon to confluence with Macquarie River, Macquarie River between Bathurst and Evans Plains Creek Management Zone.

Recent rain has improved soil moisture across many of the northern valleys but has not provided river connectivity or sufficiently addressed critical human needs in these valleys.

The continuing forecast for storm events presents an opportunity to pursue connectivity along the northern rivers and to supply critical human needs, as well as providing replenishment flows for remnant pools in riverbeds.

Where these objectives have been achieved water will be made available for other users. The order has been written to allow for adaptive management and WaterNSW will continue to monitor the situation.

The restriction does not apply to any existing water orders approved for release from WaterNSW storages.
