Temporary pump restrictions for Tuppal and Thule Creeks

Temporary pump restrictions for Tuppal and Thule Creeks

30 August 2019

Water users are advised that the NSW Government will enforce a section 324 temporary pumping restriction for the Thule and Tuppal Creeks in the River Murray system, below Mulwala Water Source.

The s.324 temporary pumping restriction for Tuppal Creek comes into effect on
1 September, while the restriction for Thule Creek will commence on 16 September.

The restrictions for the small number of affected landholders apply to pumping for irrigation, but not water needed for stock and domestic use or critical human needs.

Restrictions for both Thule and Tuppal Creeks will remain in place until 1 May 2020 unless conditions change. Restrictions cover the following areas:

  • Unregulated river access licences at Tuppal Creek, from the junction of Tocumwal Escape and Tuppal Creek to the junction of Edward River and Tuppal Creek, starting 1 September.

  • Unregulated river access licences at Tuppal Creek, from the Thule Escape (junction of Thule Creek and Yarraman Channel) to the junction of Thule Creek and Wakool River, starting 16 September.

The order is designed to protect environmental water being delivered to restore the Tuppal and Thule Creek systems following significant government infrastructure upgrades.

This restoration project has received strong community support, with the infrastructure investment to improve the delivery of environmental water to the systems.

If water is extracted during the pumping restrictions it would potentially compromise the environmental benefits.

Affected landholders were consulted prior to the pumping restriction and will be advised should conditions change.
