Locals invited to drop-in information sessions for new Wilcannia Weir

22 August 2019

WaterNSW will meet with locals at Wilcannia next week as part of the key community engagement process before construction begins on the new Wilcannia Weir.

Information session will be held on 28-29 August and locals are invited to drop in to learn details of the project and planned time frames for construction.

  • Sessions will be held on Wednesday, 28 August, from 1pm -5pm and Thursday, 29 August from 9am –12pm, at the REDI-E Training Room, 35 Reid Street, Wilcannia

WaterNSW has been commissioned by the NSW government to design and build a new weir for Wilcannia to improve long-term water security for the town. It will also bring social, economic and environmental benefits to the town and surrounding areas.

“We understand the importance of the river to the Wilcannia community and want to design and construct a weir that both meets community needs and expectations while maintaining the strong connection locals have to their river,” a spokesperson for WaterNSW said.

“These community drop-in sessions will allow us to share information and, more importantly, receive local feedback on the project.”

WaterNSW will be working on planning approvals and environmental assessments to ensure the new weir delivers for the people in Wilcannia. Construction is due to begin in July 2020 and the weir is expected to be completed in December next year.

“Building this new weir at Wilcannia is being given high priority by WaterNSW,” the spokesperson said. “Under the current scheduling, the new structure will be completed by December 2020.”

The new weir will not only deliver water security to the town, but it will also provide new recreational facilities, improve native fish habitats and maintain the cultural connection to the river.

Community engagement will continue throughout the construction phase. There will also be ongoing consultation about landscaping and creating pathways and recreation areas on the river banks.
