Bendeela Reserve open for summer holidays

18 December 2018

WaterNSW is opening the popular alcohol-free back area of Bendeela Recreation Area for the summer holidays.

High visitation rates are expected – with peak times expected to be the Christmas New Year period (22 December to 6 January) and the Australia Day long weekend. If capacity is reached, there will be limits placed on campers entering the site.

The back area will be open from 19 December through to 31 January.

Visitors are also reminded that campers will not be permitted to use gas stoves should a total fire ban be in place.

Any restrictions will be published on the WaterNSW website.

There will also be increased signage and security on site, and WaterNSW staff will be making regular patrols throughout the holiday period.

“Bendeela is a vital part of Greater Sydney’s drinking water catchment, so all visitors are urged to follow the rules and be respectful of wildlife and other visitors,” a WaterNSW spokesperson said.

Bendeela Recreation Area is also home to many native animals, especially wombats. All visitors are urged to give wildlife space during their visit and alert staff should they encounter a sick or injured animal.

Some wombats at Bendeela are known to be suffering from sarcoptic mange. As a result, visitors are urged not to touch or go near a sick animal, but instead seek assistance.

“WaterNSW works with the National parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Wildlife Rescue South Coast and WIRES to assist with managing the welfare of wombats at Bendeela,” a WaterNSW spokesperson said.

“We are also liaising with other agencies and universities to ensure we have the latest data and scientific findings from trials being undertaken to treat mange.

Visitors to Bendeela are reminded that there will be signage on site and brochures are available with more information on wombats. For more information visit
